Admissions

By Kenneth Veillon, lPN Student

My name is Kenneth Veillon, and I am a student in the LPN program at T H Harris in Opelousas. My experience with SLCC has been a great one from the beginning. I cannot complain about anyone or anything. However, I do need to express a more proactive appreciation for Ms. Decquir.

We all know that this pandemic has really thrown everything that we call normal into chaos. This is especially true when it comes to our education. I am not that old (34) but I am older than most of my class. I am, in cultural terms, even older than that. I prefer much more traditional methods of learning and communication. This all radically changed. I've had to adapt, as we all have, to conference calls, discussion boards, virtual assignments and quizzes, etc., and it has not been easy. If I were to be totally honest, there were times that I considered just not continuing my education at this time. The only thing is that if I am to be a Nurse, I MUST adapt and learn and push through.

After I resolved to finish no matter what, I realized that my success depends heavily on my instructors: their competency, integrity, and commitment, and on my ability to trust them. I have found at SLCC the best instructors imaginable. Although I appreciate all of them, I have the most confidence in Ms. Decquir.

Ms. Decquir leaves me with honesty. I don't request platitudes and inspiration. I don't want to hear I will be fine if I won't. And I don't want to pass courses without learning material.

I have confidence that Ms. Decquir is going to tell me when I am missing it and how to fix it. More so, she tells me the effect that my actions are having on the patient. This is the most important thing for me. I want to be a competent nurse. I feel that under her leadership I am progressing to the next semester competently and deservedly. I feel that my future patients will be greatly served because of her.
