Admissions

Applying for Medical assistant

Program Description

This program prepares students for employment in private and large group physician’s offices, clinics, hospitals, medical records, laboratories and/or insurance companies. Supervised and/or preceptor based clinical externships are included. Students should note that some courses have prerequisites, which must be completed before enrolling into upper-level courses and continuing in the program. Upon completion of this program, graduates are eligible to sit for the National Certification exam for Medical Assistants.

Application Process

STEP 1. Apply to the Medical Assistant program at South Louisiana Community College by completing an online application for the term in which the program begins. The SLCC online application is available at http://solacc.edu/ApplyNow. Applicants must submit the following requirements to admissions@solacc.edu. Applicants should keep copies of all documents that are submitted throughout the application process. Submitted materials will not be returned.

  • high school transcript or HiSET/GED completion
  • verification of registration with Selective Service (if required)
  • proof of immunizations or a waiver
Students who are currently taking classes at SLCC should submit a change of major form to the MA Program Coordinator, monica.david@solacc.edu, instead of completing a new online application once background requirements are met.

The Medical Assistant program has limited seating; therefore, admission to the college does not guarantee a seat in the program.

Must not be currently serving under any court-imposed order of supervised probation, work release, school release or parole in conjunction with any felony conviction(s) or plea agreement.

Applicants must be 18 years of age due clinical site regulations.

We recommend that all Financial Aid recipients meet with a financial aid advisor to verify that they have aid remaining to complete the program. SAP (Satisfactory Academic Progress) must be met each term to continue receiving aid.

STEP 2. Upon admission to SLCC, applicants must register for and attend a mandatory information session. Applicants may contact the main office at the campus they wish to attend for more information about upcoming info sessions or monitor the SLCC website for upcoming dates and registration links. At the information session, students will receive additional information regarding the following requirements:

  • Criminal Background Check (required prior to scheduling MA courses)
  • Health History, Physical Examination, TB Skin Test, and Immunizations
  • CPR for HealthCare Providers
  • Urine Drug Screen

STEP 3. Students attend a Student Success Live group registration session to schedule classes.
