Leisure Learning

We have a number of Leisure Learning courses with open enrollment.

This beginning digital photography class will cover the basics of photography, how to use your camera, composition, beginning lighting, and a little digital editing.  The class will be mostly interactive.  This is not a class where someone will stand in front of you and tell you all about photography.  Instead, the instructor will provide some basic knowledge, and then the students will apply that knowledge by using their cameras.  As a group, students will share their work and critique each other.  The instructor has some photography expeditions and assignment planned so students can apply their knowledge.  All levels are welcome, but this will be a beginner’s class.  There will be no dumb questions.  This class is designed to get you operating your camera so you can use it with success.  Both point and shoot and SLR cameras are allowed, but for best results, students should attempt to come with a DSLR in hand.  A camera is required.

This course will focus on teaching soft skills, or interpersonal skills, that will assist an individual; for job readiness, to effectively and/or efficiently collaborate with co-worker, and sustain employment.

Targeted skills are: Teamwork, Communication, Problem Solving, Flexibility/Adaptability, Work Ethics, and Interpersonal Skills.

This introductory creative writing course is designed to help those with a passion for writing take their creative writing to the next level.  The class will address various genres of writing, work on some writing tips and skills, and run a seminar setting where students will get a chance to share their writing and a chance to critique and discuss each other’s writing.  Each meeting will focus on a different genre by reading exemplars of the genre, by discussing how professional writers have addressed this genre, by looking at some creative techniques others have employed, and by having a practice piece where students will either share something from this genre they have previously written or write a new piece to share.

Are you interested in becoming a Louisiana Notary Public? In our Notary course, students will learn the skills necessary to pass the Louisiana Statewide Notary Exam. This course covers the unique system of law and courts in our state, as well as, basic notarial functions, such as drafting donations, acts of sale, contracts, conveyances of real property, testaments, small successions, and business entities. Students must purchase the Secretary of State’s book, “Fundamentals of Notarial Law and Practice,” through www.sos.la.gov. The cost of the study guide is $100.

For more information about these Leisure Learning courses, please call our Corporate College division at (337) 521-9028 or email workforce@solacc.edu.

Students will hunt for a “treasure” that history left for us through a range of primary sources, making a map from historical contexts for all documents and their own ways of decoding them. As they search for the “treasure,” students will become aware of how to apply historical methods to understand documents they might come across when searching through any records, including family histories. At the end, the “treasure” from our history will be revealed.
