Practical Nursing

Our Practical Nursing program prepares students to meet the licensure requirements for Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), as established by the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners (LSBPNE). The program progresses from simple to complex and consists of classroom instruction, lab practicum and supervised clinical activities in accredited hospitals, nursing homes, and other health care agencies.

Take a look at the Degree Plan:

We train student nurses to become Licensed Practical Nurses who are prepared to accept employment throughout Acadiana. PN programs are offered at our Abbeville, Crowley, Lafayette, Morgan City, Opelousas, St. Martinville, and Ville Platte campuses. Practical Nursing program applicants must meet all admission requirements for SLCC and all requirements established by the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nursing Examiners (LSBPNE) before admission to the program.

General education courses in this program can be taken as advanced placement and you are encouraged to complete them before enrolling in the program.  A student must earn a grade of B or better for these courses to be accepted as a part of the program’s curriculum.  This is a requirement of LSBPNE.  Articulated courses from other institutions are determined at the discretion of the Dean of Nursing and Allied Health and the Practical Nursing Program Chair, and are based upon individual evaluation.

Each course in the PN program must be completed with a minimum score of 80%, and students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 while enrolled in the program. Upon graduation, the student is awarded a diploma and is eligible to apply for the National Council of State Boards Licensure Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).
