A high school graduate from Vermilion Parish will get help with college tuition thanks to the The Lt. Dronet Detachment Marine Corps League and Gulf Coast Bank Scholarship.

Missy Rogers, owner of Noble Plastics Inc. of Grand Coteau, will deliver the keynote address during South Louisiana Community College’s Spring 2018 Commencement. The ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 10 at the Cajundome Convention Center.

South Louisiana Community College’s International School of Aviation Excellence in New Iberia is streamlining cockpit workflows in its helicopter fleet. The ISAE recently received nearly $20,000 in grant funds from the Louisiana Board of Regents to purchase iPads, planning software, GPS systems, and mounting devices.

South Louisiana Community College is hoping to bring its Commercial Driving program to Ville Platte in the coming months. The college’s Corporate College division is exploring workforce demands for such a program in Evangeline Parish.

SLCC students will be showcasing their talents today from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. for the annual Spring Student Showcase. This event is an exciting, cross-disciplinary academic event that allows students to share their knowledge and talents with others. The day will include awards for best student presentations, live demonstrations, collaborative demonstrations, poetry readings, art projects, live music, culinary competitions, chemistry experiments, and a helicopter fly-in.

Several our students and faculty with the Umbrella Club dropped off food donations to Second Harvest Food Bank this week. The club had been collecting items for a month at several campuses. They donated more than 3,100 lbs of canned goods to the food bank. Dr. Jennifer Rasch, club advisor, was told that this might be the largest donation from a single group (minus grocery stores) the food bank has ever received.

More than 40 employers will be at our Spring Career Fair today from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The event is being held in the Devalcourt Auditorium on the Lafayette Campus.

The South Louisiana Community College Foundation honored Lafayette General Health as its 2017 Benefactor of the Year during a ceremony this morning at the college’s Lafayette Campus.

The latest expansion of South Louisiana Community College’s Adult Education program is working to bridge gaps in educational attainment in Lafayette Parish. SLCC and the Lafayette Housing Authority have partnered to bring adult learning to qualified residents of LHA properties.

South Louisiana Community College is answering the call for a certified and well-trained workforce in the industrial electronics technology field – thanks to a $225,000 grant from the National Science Foundation. This three-year grant is a first for the college from NSF.

South Louisiana Community College’s Chancellor Dr. Natalie Harder is being recognized for her leadership and outstanding efforts by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education’s District IV.

A Health Professions Fair will be held Monday, April 9 from 9 a.m. - noon in the Devalcourt Auditorium on the Lafayette Campus. The Fair will feature 23 employers and universities.

The National Council for Marketing and Public Relations recently named Christine Payton, Director of Communications and Marketing at South Louisiana Community College, the National Communicator of the Year at the organization’s national conference recently held in Las Vegas.

Thirty employers and universities will be at SLCC’s T.H. Harris Campus Thursday, March 22 for a Career and Transfer Fair. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 1 p.m. The T.H. Harris Campus is located at 332 E. South Street in Opelousas.

SLCC now offers career exploration software for prospective students, current students, alumni, and community members.

Each semester, South Louisiana Community College honors students for high academic achievement.

Faculty from SLCC’s STEM division recently created a faculty-funded student scholarship. Scholarship applications open Thursday, March 15.

South Louisiana Community College’s enrollment numbers from 2017 to 2018 show that more first-time students are staying in college.

Potential students and parents can learn about academic programs, admissions, and financial aid from South Louisiana Community College faculty, staff, and students during a series of Open House events in March.

Students – Financial Aid refunds are being processed for the Spring 2018 semester.

Local power company Cleco is investing in students at South Louisiana Community College. Today, Cleco donated $20,000 to the SLCC Foundation to be used for student scholarships.

The Electrical Program at the SLCC T.H. Harris Campus in Opelousas received new equipment recently and students are already using it for training.

The SLCC Campus bookstore will be closed until further notice due to water damage following the hard freeze Tuesday and Wednesday.
