Carpentry Program Coming to our St. Martinville Campus

ST. MARTINVILLE – South Louisiana Community College is answering a call from industry and offering a Carpentry program at its St. Martinville Campus this Fall.  

SLCC’s Corporate College will offer the program at the Evangeline Campus. Registration for will begin in October. 

Students will gain valuable experience with building practices, cutting-edge materials, and industry best practices. Program graduates will train for careers in framing, roofing, concrete and foundation work, drywall installation, building science, remodeling and preservation, site preparation, and interior and exterior finish.

“We are excited to bring this program to the Evangeline Campus. We will continue to do our due diligence in bringing additional programs to serve the needs of this community,” said Claudia Provost, Evangeline Campus Director.

Carpentry Level 1 and Carpentry Level 2 courses will be led by instructor Gerald Porter. He has worked in construction and construction training for 40 years. Porter is an NCCER-certified Carpentry instructor and NCCER-core curriculum instructor.

The Carpentry program will also offer topic-specific classes in wiring, blueprint reading, drywall, architectural plans and building codes, and framing for floors, walls, roofs, and stairs.  Project-based class for building decks, porches, and fences will be another option for training. 

Tuition for each of the 4-month programs includes carpentry tools and textbooks. Tuition assistance is available for the short-term courses.

SLCC established the Corporate College in 2015 to offer continuing education courses, leisure learning programs, and customized training for businesses across at its campuses across Acadiana. Short-term training programs to prepare community members to meet the demands of area businesses is the focus of Corporate College.
