Workforce Development Month: SLCC is Transforming Communities and Building the Future Workforce

workforce

September is Workforce Development month! Workforce development plays a crucial role in ensuring the economic prosperity of Acadiana and empowering individuals to build their own future. South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) stands at the forefront of this mission, with comprehensive workforce programs and certificate courses that have been instrumental in transforming South Louisiana's job landscape.

One of the standout projects spearheaded by SLCC's workforce team is the new First Solar facility in New Iberia. With its innovative workforce training programs, SLCC will equip individuals with the skills needed to work in the growing solar industry. Not only does this initiative promote environmental sustainability, but it also provides local residents with opportunities for well-paying jobs in a burgeoning sector.

In collaboration with the Port of West St. Mary, SLCC has opened a state-of-the-art workforce training facility. Funded by an Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant, this facility is equipped with modern classrooms, welding booths, and a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) pad. This initiative is a testament to SLCC's dedication to advancing regional competitiveness, creating skilled jobs, and promoting private investment in the region.

SLCC offers a wide range of workforce programs, ensuring that there is something for everyone. From electrical and CDL training (where SLCC's own instructor, Nelson Landry, was named Louisiana Truck Driver of the Year for 2023!) to welding, healthcare, and more, SLCC's programs are designed to meet the specific needs of various industries and communities.

As technology advances, new job opportunities emerge. SLCC recognized this trend and introduced programs for fiber optic technicians and heavy equipment operators. These programs not only address the growing demand for skilled workers in these fields but also prepare individuals for stable and well-paying careers in high-demand sectors.

Impressive Growth and Impact

From 2022 to 2023, SLCC’s Economic & Workforce Development team achieved remarkable milestones in workforce development:

  • 542 technical diplomas were awarded, highlighting the success of students completing their programs.
  • Industry-Based Credentials awarded to workforce students increased by an impressive 31% from 2021-22 to 2022-23, showcasing the quality and relevance of SLCC's training.
