LAFAYETTE — South Louisiana Community College is offering students this Fall several class formats to suit their needs. The intent is to provide a safe environment that facilitates learning.

Masks are required on all campuses and check-ins will continue to be required when entering a building on campus. The college also is continuing to follow CDC guidelines with santitation stations in all buidings and routine cleaning of classrooms and office spaces.

“We are ready to welcome students back to campus this Fall and we’ve worked diligently to provide access to classes in multiple ways – in-person, online, or a hybrid in the safest environments possible,” said Dr. Vincent June, SLCC Chancellor. “We know some students prefer to be in a classroom while others prefer online learning. Our class formats provide the flexibility our students want and need.”

Specifically, students can select from four class formats including:

  • On-campus - Students take courses fully on-campus (may rotate in small groups).
  • Hybrid - Students have the ability to rotate between on-campus and WebEx instruction on set days and times. Online work may also be required.
  • HySync (Hybrid – Synchronous) – Students meet on-campus for the first day and the remaining class periods are held via WebEx on set days and times.
  • Online – Students work in the Canvas classroom with set due dates, but no set class interactions.

In addition, SLCC will offer students the opportunity to borrow a laptop for the Fall 2021 term. Applications opened August 2.

Piloted over the summer, the Laptop Loan program allows students enrolled in for-credit classes to borrow a laptop from the college. Computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Students are required to complete an application and agreement form to begin the loan process. Once students apply, they will receive an email outlining next steps. All campuses are eligible for the program.

“This is an initiative that removes the technology barrier that many students face when coming to college,” said Dr. Courtney Schoolmaster, interim Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs. “We rolled this program out this summer and we’re excited to offer it to our students this Fall.”

Schoolmaster noted that tutoring services have been expanded for the Fall semester to include technology sessions that will help students use the college’s learning platform Canvas, and WebEx for online and/or hybrid courses.
