SLCC Expanding Three-Week Scaffolding Program to Houma

SLCC Expanding Three-Week Scaffolding Program to Houma

South Louisiana Community College will offer its Basic Industrial Scaffolding course at the SLCC Maritime and Corporate Training Center in Houma starting in November. The program is currently offered at the community college’s New Iberia Campus and has graduated more than 250 students.

The construction job sector is growing faster than average, but also facing a shortage of skilled craft laborers, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and industry officials. SLCC is expanding the Basic Industrial Scaffolding program to address this shortage.

In this 3-week course, students will gain the skills and certifications necessary to obtain employment with contracting companies in entry-level positions. Tools and a tool belt are included with in the tuition of the Basic Industrial Scaffolding course so graduates are job-ready. Job placement is also available to graduates of the program. No experience in construction is required to enroll in the course.

“Someone who completes the three weeks of dedicated training with no prior scaffolding experience is the equivalent of someone with four to six months of on-the-job experience,” stated Jobe Gwin, Industrial Trades Program Manager for SLCC’s Corporate College. "We see every type of worker enroll in this course, from cooks to engineers. It's a way to get their foot in a door."

SLCC’s Corporate College was established in 2015. This division of SLCC offers short-term training for in-demand jobs to meet the needs of the community’s workforce.
