Fall 2020 Frequently Asked Questions
We know you have questions about the Fall 2020 semester. Do I go to class on campus or is my class online? If I go to class on campus, do I have to wear a mask? We've have answers. We put a list of questions (and answers) together just for you.
General COVID-19 Questions
Yes. Masks are required at all times while in an SLCC building.
Eating will not be permitted in classrooms. Drinking in class is limited to containers with straws. Masks must remain on. Lounges and picnicking areas are available for eating.
Yes, rooms are set up with social distancing and signage.
Yes. Sanitation stations will be set-up throughout the college, but you are permitted to bring personal supplies. Hand sanitizer should have an alcohol content of 60% by volume.
SLCC buildings and classrooms will be restricted to SLCC students only. Friends, family, and children will not be permitted in the classrooms, offices, or common areas.
Course Format Questions
A HySync class meets the first day on campus. The remaining class meetings are in WebEx at the day and time listed on your schedule. An online class does not meet on campus and does not have set days and times. You do have set due dates though.
The online class offers discussion boards, video lectures, assignments, quizzes, and readings.
HySync courses will show a room, day, and time. Remember the first day of class is in-person so a room is provided. The day and time will be used for the in-person first day and that will be your meeting day and time for your WebEx portion.
Yes, visit your canvas page for that course and click the WebEx to login the first day.
I live in Crowley and don’t have a car, does this mean I can’t sign up for a HySync course on the Lafayette campus? You can certainly take a HySync class in Lafayette. While you are welcome to come to the Lafayette campus you are not required. You will join via WebEx on day one instead of in-person.
Check the website for more details be program and discipline. You will also find a welcome letter explaining the class format in the announcement section of each of your courses in Canvas.

A hybrid class is a mix of work on campus and online/webex. Students are assigned groups and rotate among the on campus, online, and webex portions. Each discipline and program may set up their Hybrid structure a little differently. Check the Fall Program page for an overview of your discipline or program.
Additionally, the instructor will contact you via canvas to explain how the course will work.
Depending on the discipline/program you may be able to attend class remotely. Check the Fall program page and contact your instructor to discuss the situation.
Technology and Access Questions
WebEx is a video conferencing software that allows students to meet face to face with their instructor from the comfort of their home.
A computer, tablet, or chrome book running, Windows 7 and newer, Mac OSX 10.6 and newer or Linux - Chrome OS. We recommend 1GB or RAM and 2 GHz Processor.

Canvas is a learning management system that organizes students’ courses. Each course you are registered for is a tile. When you click the tile you will see announcements, grades, syllabi, and any course work the instructor has published. Visit the Canvas or LoLA webpage and hit the reset password link below the login box.
Visit canvas to find the link to the WebEx portion of your course.
SLCC offers a free license for all students to Office 365. Office 365 provides students with an online version of Outlook for email, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and other Microsoft products. SLCC computer labs will be open for the Fall semester. Students can access online course via the computer labs. However, if the state falls back to phase one your access may be rescinded.
Yes, if you are eligible for financial aid and receive a book voucher, you may now use that voucher to purchase technology. This technology includes the purchase of a computer.
A computer that meets the requirements list above or the HP Laptop Bundle #1 (Good) - HP 14'' Laptop Athlon/4GB/500GB HDD, Wireless Mouse & Commuter Backpack for General Studies courses. If you are in a specialized program (Digital Media, Application Software) check with your advisor for computer specifications.
