South Louisiana Community College (SLCC) is starting two new short-term programs and expanding other courses to additional campuses.

SLCC will be offering short-term training in Fiber Optic Technician and Heavy Equipment Operator. In addition, SLCC will be expanding their Manufacturing Technology and Basic Industrial Scaffolding courses to meet the needs of industry and community members.

The 20-week Fiber Optic Technician course will be offered at SLCC’s Crowley campus. There, students will learn how to install and repair fiber optic lines to meet increasing demands of the telecommunications industry in Louisiana. Tuition for this course is $11,500 and earn eight certifications upon successful completion. The SLCC staff is well-versed in programs that may help defray some of the costs for qualifying students, too.

The 9-week Heavy Equipment Operator course will be offered at SLCC’s New Iberia campus. Students enrolled will participate in a hands-on curriculum, learning how to operate a variety of equipment, including excavators and backhoes. Tuition for this course is $6000.  Some students may qualify for special tuition assistance for this program.

In addition to the new courses, SLCC will be expanding its short-term Basic Industrial Scaffold Building and Manufacturing Technology courses. Basic Industrial Scaffolding will be offered at SLCC’s Opelousas campus in addition to the New Iberia campus, beginning in September. The 5-month Manufacturing Technology course, currently offered at SLCC’s Morgan City campus, will be expanding to SLCC’s Lafayette and New Iberia campuses in the fall to provide more residents with the opportunity to train in these high-wage, high-demand careers.

“We are excited to offer these training opportunities to community members wanting to pursue a new career path or gain a new skill,” stated Anthony Baham, spokesman for SLCC’s Workforce and Economic Division. “We work closely with our local industries to understand the skills they need for new employees to grow within their companies.”

SLCC created its Workforce and Economic Development division in 2015 to offer continuing education courses, leisure learning programs, and customized training for businesses across its eight-parish footprint in Acadiana. Its focus over the last several years has been providing industry-driven, short-term training programs to prepare residents meet the demands of area businesses.
