South Louisiana Community College will offer an Ophthalmic Assistant course starting in October. Students will learn about eye anatomy, eye diseases, and basic ophthalmic pharmacology. This course is a non-credit course offered by SLCC’s Corporate College division.

The Ophthalmic Assistant course is 27 hours, meeting three evenings a week for three weeks. This course will be offered once a year, with limited seating. This is an in-person course held at SLCC Lafayette. Tuition is $550.

The average wage for ophthalmic assistants is $15 per hour. Ophthalmic Assistant was ranked #14 in a list of “Best Jobs without a College Degree” by U.S. News and World Report. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects 16.5 percent employment growth for ophthalmic careers between 2018 and 2028.

“Our Ophthalmic Assistant program will provide our community with qualified staff for the growing healthcare industry,” stated Kala Marks, Healthcare Program Manager for SLCC’s Corporate College. “With training offered in the evenings for just three weeks, this allows those who are underemployed a new career path.”
