SLCC Answers Workforce Needs with CNA Program Expansion

ABBEVILLE – South Louisiana Community College will be offering a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) course through its Corporate College division. CNAs are in high demand in South Louisiana and across the U.S. SLCC has created this program to meet healthcare industry needs.

This 6-week course will be taught at SLCC‘s Gulf Campus in Abbeville starting this month. This course will expand to the Opelousas, Ville Platte, Crowley, St. Martinville, and Lafayette campuses over the next several months so more community members have this training option.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, job growth for nursing assistants in general is expected to be at a rate of 11 percent over the 2016-2026 decade. This projected growth is faster than the average for all occupations and is expected to create 173,400 new positions by 2026.

“This is a short-term class that will provide students with many options for obtaining employment. They will be able to work in a clinic, hospital, a patient’s home, or even as a traveling CNA. The evening hours are convenient so students can continue to work while in classes,” stated Margaret Beard, Workforce Training coordinator for SLCC’s Corporate College.

SLCC created the Corporate College in 2015 to offer continuing education courses, leisure learning programs, and customized training for businesses across 10 campuses. Short-term training programs are available to prepare community members to meet the demands of area businesses.
