Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration

Do you have a passion for troubleshooting appliances? Whether you want to work in residential or commercial HVAC, as an apprentice, service technician, or thermal engineer, SLCC will prepare you for life in HVAC after graduation.


Our Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration program introduces you to real-world skills in a fast-paced, hands-on environment, where you'll expand your understanding of installation, service, repair, and maintenance of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems.

Employment of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration mechanics and installers is projected to grow 15 percent from 2016 to 2026, much faster than the average for all occupations. Commercial and residential building construction is expected to drive employment growth, and job opportunities for HVACR technicians are expected to be good.  

Graduates of our Heating, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration program are able to: 

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the refrigeration cycle including safety procedures and testing requirements for temperature/pressure relationships.  
  • Explain the physics of heat and how it applies to the air conditioning and refrigeration field.  
  • Troubleshoot and test air conditioning components, systems, and accessories, including the sequence of operation and air flow.   
  • Show knowledge of heating and air conditioning and refrigeration controls, including wiring configurations and technical components for optimum performance.

  • HVAC Installer/Repairer Average Salary: $51,100
  • HVAC Helper Average Salary: $32,650
