STUDENT ENGAGEMENT & LEADERSHIP AWARDS / SCHOLARSHIPS

Each spring, the SLCC Office of Student Engagement (OSE) will hosts its Annual Student Engagement and Leadership Awards Ceremony.  At this event, student leaders and advisors are recognized for their involvement at South Louisiana Community College, in SLCC Student Groups and Organizations (SGOs), and in the Student Government Association (SGA).

The awards below all have different nomination processes, so please see the individual award descriptions for more information.  More information regarding nominations and portfolios will be released in March.

Recognitions and Awards

  • OSE Leadership Certificate—self-nominated through OSE Leadership Certificate Eligibility Verification Form (link to uploaded form on the Leadership Certificate tab) The form should be submitted via email to the Assistant Director for Student Engagement.  Students will be contacted if there are any problems with submitted forms.  All eligible students who have successfully completed and submitted verification forms (including any feedback provided by the Assistant Director for Student Engagement) will be awarded certificates.
     
  • Federal Student Worker of the Year—faculty/staff-nominatedTo nominate a student, a faculty and/or staff member should submit the student’s name, the hiring department’s name, and a short paragraph describing the student’s successes on the job.  The paragraphs submitted will be reviewed by the award selection committee.  All award nominees’ positions as FSWs will be confirmed with the Financial Aid office before the nominee is considered by the award selection committee.
     
  • Student Service Award—self-, peer-, and/or faculty/staff-nominatedNominators should submit the student’s name, the student’s primary Student Group or Organization affiliation (if applicable), and a short paragraph describing the student’s service activities.  Top nominees will be asked to submit a portfolio* of service, and portfolios will be reviewed by the award selection committee.
     
  • Diversity in Leadership Award—self-, peer-, and/or faculty/staff-nominated. Nominators should submit the student’s name, the student’s primary Student Group or Organization affiliation (if applicable), and a short paragraph describing the student’s dedication to diversity through past leadership activities.  Top nominees will be asked to submit a portfolio of diversity in leadership, and portfolios will be reviewed by the award selection committee.
     
  • Student Leader of the Year—peer and/or faculty/staff-nominated. Nominators should submit the student’s name, the student’s primary Student Group or Organization affiliation (if applicable), and a short paragraph describing the student’s leadership accomplishments at SLCC.  Top nominees will be asked to submit a portfolio of leadership, and portfolios will be reviewed by the award selection committee.
     
  • SGO Program of the Year—SGO self-nominated through the submission of a portfolio*. Any program (event, service opportunity, social media campaign, etc.) hosted by a Student Group or Organization within the current academic year is eligible for this award.  An SGO may only submit one program for the award.  The award selection committee will review the program based on the portfolio provided. Portfolios should be submitted via email to the Assistant Director for Student Engagement.
     
  • SGO Campus Impact Award—peer and/or faculty/staff-nominated. Nominators should submit the Student Group or Organization’s name, the SGO’s campus (if applicable), and a short paragraph describing the positive impact of the SGO on SLCC’s student body.  The paragraphs submitted will be reviewed by the award selection committee.
     
  • SGO Outstanding Advisor Award—SGO-nominated. Nominators should submit the advisor’s name, the advisor’s Student Group or Organization affiliation, and a short paragraph describing the advisor’s successes in leadership.  The paragraphs submitted will be reviewed by the award selection committee.

*If requested, portfolios should contain the following:

  1. Cover letter—why do you deserve the award?
  2. Supporting Evidence—flyers, pictures, sign-in sheets, testimonials, recommendation letters, etc.”

OSE Scholarship Opportunities

Each year the Office of Student Engagement and partnership with the Office of Institutional Advancement offers current and future student leaders the opportunity to apply for the Excellence in Leadership & Engagement Scholarship. This scholarship is awarded to a 1st generation college student who is actively involved in a student club and organization.
