Center for Minority Excellence

Southwestern black student leadership conference

The Center for Minority Excellence takes students to a professional development conference to interact with other African American college students throughout the nation. The conference is titled the Southwestern Black Student Leadership Conference (SBSLC) (https://sbslc.tamu.edu/) and has been hosted each January for three days of conference activities by the students of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas for approximately 30 plus years.

There, students engage in meaningful personal and professional development while addressing the problems and concerns that affect the Black community. The conference offers each participant an opportunity to attend workshops, hear nationally renowned speakers, experience black businesses, meet other colleges and employers for potential job offers and educational attainment opportunities, and network with nearly 1,000 students and advisors. Because the conference is hosted by students, they invite other students across the nation to submit conference presentations to be accepted to present to their peers.
