Machine Tool Technology
A new Machine Tool Technology course is starting in May at the Young Memorial Campus in Morgan City. Students are being enrolled now.
In the 10-week course, students will learn to apply technical knowledge and skills to plan, manufacture, assemble, test, and repair parts, mechanisms, machines, and structures in which materials are cast, formed, shaped, molded, heat treated, cut, twisted, pressed, fused, stamped or worked.
Machine Tool Technology is an in-demand career path. Machinists are hired by firms that perform repair, new product design, manufacturing, aircraft, logging and ship repair.
SLCC’s Young Memorial Campus is also working with the St. Mary Parish School Board and local industries to offer a machinist class to graduating high school seniors. Machine shops across St. Mary Parish are struggling to find skilled labor, so offering this summer program will benefit the students as well as local businesses.
“The Machine Tool Technology course is a response to the request of Industry demand. We have had a consortium of machine tool businesses come together in request of skilled labor highlighting the basic fundamentals of machining. It is great seeing the labor demand return in St. Mary Parish,” stated Anthony Baham, Dean for Maritime and Continuing Education for SLCC’s Corporate College. “Students graduating this short-term program will have the proficiency in the basic fundamentals of manual machining. Additionally, students will get an introduction to the CNC process.”
In addition to the Machine Tool Technology course, SLCC’s Young Memorial Campus will also begin Certified Nursing Assistant, HVAC repair, Maritime Ship Fitting, and Basic Welding courses in February.
