Local Foundation Covering Costs for 50 College Courses

Students have the opportunity to take advantage of 50 college courses free of charge, courtesy of the Hugh and Byrnes Young Foundation’s Scholars program. This is the Young Foundation’s second consecutive sponsorship of college courses at the Young Memorial Campus in Morgan City. This fall, the Young Foundation has expanded the free courses to any student attending the Young Memorial campus and taking a general education course.

“Our goal is to do real and permanent good in and for Morgan City. What better way could we do this than to promote the education of our citizens,” said Brenda Ayo, H&B Young Foundation president.

Four general education courses will be available at the Young Memorial Campus beginning August 14. These courses can be applied towards an associate degree and can also be transferred to a four-year university.

“These courses are a major opportunity for students to get a jump start on a bachelor’s or associate’s degree right in their community,” said Lana Fontenot, SLCC’s associate vice chancellor for institutional advancement.

“Through the benevolence of the Young Foundation, we are able to provide unprecedented educational opportunities for those who are seeking a college degree.”

This program is made possible through a partnership with South Louisiana Community College, which first offered general education courses at the Young Memorial Campus this summer. In April, the Louisiana Community and Technical College System announced the realignment of the Young Memorial Campus to SLCC.

To qualify for the Young Foundation Scholars program, individuals must have never taken a course through SLCC. All courses begin August 14 and include:

  • English 1010:
  • Rhetoric and Composition Math 1105:
  • College Algebra Biology 1000:
  • Intro to Biology Psychology 2010:
  • Intro to Psychology (online)

All courses are 15 weeks in length.

The first 50 slots will be free of charge, courtesy of the H&B Young Foundation. To enroll, call (337) 521-9000 and reference the Young Foundation Scholars Program at the Young Memorial Campus.
